Safety in Ethiopia
Ethiopia is considered to be one of the safest African countries to travel in, though there are some areas where disturbances may flare up. These include the border regions with Djibouti and Eritrea and some parts of the South, bordering Somalia.
In 2016 large scale protests against the government were registered in the Oromia and Amhara regions of central Ethiopia, but tourists were never targeted. In general it is highly unlikely that tourists get caught up in civil disturbances, particularly if they are traveling with a local official guide.
Most of the time, Government Travel Advice issued by the Foreign Affairs Departments of different countries tend to be over cautious, yet if they warn not to venture into a specific area you want to visit and you carry a travel insurance, if might be a good idea to verify with your insurance company the coverage of your policy under those circumstances.
It is always recommendable to consult with tour companies and official guides inside the country before taking the decision whether or not to visit a certain region.
Unemployment has generated many self-appointed and unofficial guides. If you travel on your own, you might be approached by anyone offering his services particularly at the exit of bus stations. Be polite but firm and refuse any offer.
